Plot

A fairy tale character who is about to flunk out of fairy tale school, Jack must perform a heroic deed by Monday or fail miserably, just like his father before him. Anxious to make good, Jack sells his C.O.W. (Computer of Wonder) for a handful of magic beans and a mysterious book that records his adventures as he’s having them. Accompanied by his sidekick Grayson — a goose who ate a bean and underwent an amazing transformation — Jack climbs the magic beanstalk to recover the fabled Harp of Destiny from the evil Giant who lives in the sky. Helping Jack on his perilous quest is the spunky Jillian, a fearless young girl whom Jack meets on his journey — and who just may have a hidden agenda…

Synopsis

Based on the classis fairytale, this live-action film focuses on young Jack’s adventures up the enchanted beanstalk and into a magical world of fantasy and danger as he desperately tries to save his family and his community, all while discovering his own heroic identity.
The adventure opens in a fairy-tale schoolhouse where an inattentive and distracted Jack (Colin Ford) struggles to learn the philosophies and definitions of heroism, despite the efforts of the school’s crotchety Headmaster (Christopher Lloyd). The lessons finally sink in when Jack learns that his devoted Mother (Katey Sagal) has lost her job and that desperate times lie ahead.
Calling upon the hero’s lessons concerning self-sacrifice, Jack ventures into a mysterious pawn shop manned by an accentric Booker (Wallace Shawn) and trades his most valued possession. In return, the Booker gives him a handful of magic beans. Jack’s pride at his own selflessness quicly disappears when his Mother explains to him that he has been swindled by the Booker and that the beans are worthless. The beans are then thrown out the window, discarded and forgotten. Then comes the magic…
The next morning, Jack and his Mother discover that the beans have grown into a humongous beanstalk, reaching into the sky. Jack soon learn of a castle in the clouds where a great and terrible Giant (voice of James Earl Jones) lives. The Giant has stolen away a liltle girl who has the voice of an angel, and, as punishment for her refusal to sing, has transformed her into a golden harp. Determined to prove himself as a hero, Jack climb the beanstalk looking to rescue her. Along the way, he meets up woth Jillian (Chloes Moretz), a mysterious little girl with a hidden agenda, and Grayson (Gilbert Gottfried), the beloved family goose who, after swallowing one of the magic beans, becomes a half-man/half-goose, wisecracking sidekick. Together tehy ventre through a treacherous stone maze, past Antipode (Chevy Chase), the twisted oddball who guard the gates, and into the dark and sinister kingdom of the Giant.
